The Baylor men’s basketball team got an early start on its 2019 recruiting class as Silsbee guard Jordyn Adams made a verbal commitment on Saturday.
Though Adams is only a sophomore, he’s already received interest from major colleges as he chose Baylor over such schools as Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.
Adams said he visited Baylor’s campus several weeks ago and then came back Friday to watch the Bears football team beat Northwestern State, 55-7, at McLane Stadium.
“It’s a great opportunity to play in the Big 12,” Adams said. “I like Coach (Scott) Drew because he focuses on graduating players. It feels like family and that’s what it’s all about.”
The 6-3 Adams averaged 13 points and four assists as a freshman for a Silsbee team that finished 31-6 last season and reached the Class 4A championship game before losing to Dallas Lincoln, 75-72.
“It was a great experience,” Adams said. “We were a running team that got a lot of points off our press. I liked to get to the basket and create and separate and get my shot off.”
Silsbee coach Joe Sigler said Adams has improved a great deal over the past two years and believes he’ll do a lot of big things before his high school career is over in 2019.
“Jordyn’s skill level has gotten better each year,” Sigler said. “When I saw him in eighth grade, I projected what he could become. He started as a freshman for a team that made the state championship game which is remarkable.”
Sigler said Adams has the versatility to drive to the basket or hit long-range shots.
“He can go for 30 on any given night,” Sigler said. “He plays bigger than his size, so I can post him up against smaller guys. He’s also a great defender.”
